How To Grow Your Self Confidence

When you woke up this morning, what were some of your first thoughts?  Were you excited for the day?  Were you tired and dreading getting out of bed?  Did you look in the mirror and start picking yourself apart?  In this blog, I want to show you how to take on your day through faith as you grow your self confidence!

I talk all about self confidence in this podcast episode:

Ready To Learn How To Grow Your Self Confidence?

Keep reading to learn how I grew my self confidence through consistency, God's Word, speaking positively over myself, writing down who God says I am, and more!

Grow Your Self Confidence Through God's Word

The first step towards growing your self confidence is knowing who God says you are.  God's thoughts about you are more true and powerful than anything you think about yourself and anything other people say.  This is because our minds can only see what's in front of us.  But God's thoughts come from the truth of who He created you to be, regardless of what you've been through!  He sees the best and worst of you, and this is what He says...

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." - Joshua 1:9

Does it sound like God is worried that you aren't good enough?  Is He scared that you can't do it?  NOPE!  He says to be strong and courageous!  He reminds us to NOT be afraid or allow discouragement to settle in.  WHY?  Because He is with us wherever we go.

When we know the Word of God, we can be confident in what He says about us.  However, it can be hard to believe His truths when we struggle with doubts, negative feelings, and challenges.  It takes practice!

Practice Speaking Confidently About Yourself

The very first thing you can do to practice self confidence is to change what you're saying!  No matter what you say, your words have power.  You can tear yourself down or build yourself up through what you speak.  Let me show you what I mean.

Finish this sentence:  "I am ______________."

What was the first word that came to mind?  Tired?  Sick? Overwhelmed? Frustrated?  If you're like me, you've spent days going around thinking and saying how tired you are.  Did that change how you felt?  Of course not!  You kept feeling tired!  If you're feeling negatively right now, whether it's about your health, your mood, or your success in life, you can start to change it.  All you have to do is speak the thing you want to see.

If your first thought was "I am tired," then change it to "I am looking forward to my second wind."  If your first thought was "I am so fat," then change it to "I am excited to grow my health on this journey."

I can testify that what you speak about yourself will chase you down.  It doesn't matter if it's negative or positive, it's going to come after you!  The devil only wants to steal from you and tear you down, so if you open your mouth with negativity he'll jump on it.  But God's Word is so powerful that when you speak it, He goes into motion to make it happen! Wouldn't you rather be chased down by health, joy, and energy?  Me too.  So speak it over your life!

Jeremiah 17:7-8 tells us what happens when we trust in what God says about us...

"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
    that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
    and never fails to bear fruit."

The Power of Consistently Speaking Confidence

We've all heard that it takes about a month to create a new habit.  It can even begin to happen in as little as three weeks!

I promise you that if you start consistently speaking Godly “I am” statements over yourself today, you’ll be amazed at the woman you become!  Even thirty days from now, you’ll feel so different.  I practiced this for myself, and it has changed everything!

It might seem like life is easy for me, and that's why I can be so positive.  But it really hasn’t been.  I’ve been through so many trials in my life, and there were countless times when I wanted to give up.  I’ve had cancer, I’ve lost my dad and my mom to illness, I’ve been through challenges with my kids, challenges with my business, and so many other things.  (You can read about how God carried me through these challenges in my book, Addicted To The Climb. I wrote it to encourage and inspire women just like you!)

In all of those challenges, I had to choose to take God’s hand and let Him walk me through them!  Until I started speaking God’s truths about myself and these challenges, I struggled.  Trust me, I know how easy it is to get stuck in feeling bad about yourself and your life.  And I know how difficult it can be to consistently speak truths over your life.  So trust me when I tell you that words make all the difference!

Write Your Truths

For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.

- Psalm 139:13-14

Remember that "I am ________" sentence I had you finish?  Now, I want you to write God's truths about yourself!  Just like Psalm 139:13-14 says, God created you as a wonderful work!  He saw you before you were born and knitted every fiber of your mind, body, and spirit together.  You can be so confident in who He created you to be!

Let's start practicing with some new "I am" statements.  Here are a few of my positive statements...

I am a princess.

I am clothed in God's coat of armor every day.

I am going to be on fire all year.

If you aren't sure what say about yourself, start with 2 Corinthians 5:21.  God tells us who He is all throughout the Bible.  This verse is one that you can say about yourself.  "I am the righteousness of God!"

You have to develop consistency with how you speak about yourself and your life.  It’s just like working out.  If you go to the gym once, you aren’t going to hit all your goals.  However, if you show up consistently, you’ll see the results you want.  Dolls, today is a new day!  Turn your page and start writing a new story. Your first step towards a new story is writing those I AM statements.

If you aren’t happy, it’s up to you to make a change.  Pray about it and ask God to show you what changes to make.  God promises us in Ecclesiastes 6:10 that whatever is written in heaven is what will come to pass.  Your prayers and your words of faith are recorded in heaven!  Speak what you want to see.
